Once home, Agnes begged her parents to allow her to take ballet lessons, to no avail. She continued to pursue her intense interest by learning everything she could about dancing, through reading and by carefully poring over endless photographs. Agnes even created a scrapbook of photos of dancers. When the Diaghilev Ballets Russes came to Los Angeles, Anna took Agnes and Margaret to see a Saturday matinee and by 1906 she had earned the title of prima ballerina. Pavlova performed across Europe, making occasional appearances with Sergey Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes.
The shortcomings of Agnes’s physical makeup were more than compensated by an incredible endurance. Still, at fourteen, it was little consolation. Her parents’ restrictions made things even more difficult. They limited Agnes to one private lesson of forty-five minutes and one hour-long class lesson a week, while the rest of the students attended every day and practiced together.
