When considering urban universities, one should make some distinction between the older institutions that are located in the largest cities in this country and those institutions that might be viewed as either new urban or suburban universities. For instance, George Mason University in Virginia, the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, and Kennesaw College in Georgia have many of the attributes of urban universities in that they are commuter schools that cater to a working clientele employed in a city.

They frequently work under severe time constraints as they juggle jobs, families, and studies, and making time for things like library research can be very difficult. These clients are also accustomed to being treated as adults. They are people with responsibilities who are making sacrifices for an education, and the library must deal with them with sensitivity. To be effective, it must provide good service that does not threaten them at those odd hours when they can come to the library. The librarian must be prepared to ensure that a user leaves the point of service with a feeling of having been dealt with as a peer who needs specific knowledge but who is competent to find it in most cases.

In many cases, comparing programs at the University of California, Los Angeles, to a distinctly nonurban institution like the University of Illinois will be more useful than comparisons to a crosstown institution serving city students like the California State University at Los Angeles. In any case, the special needs and capabilities of research institutions and teaching colleges and of the different clienteles that they serve must be considered in any reasonable discussion, whether in the context of the city or in another setting.
