When Palmer found the building locked, he returned to the bakery. A cook on the steamer Cataraqui also noticed the flames and, rousing the rest of the crew, joined their attempts to free the ship from her berth beside the blaze. The ship had been moored fast the previous evening because of the high winds, delaying the crew's efforts. Once freed, the pounding waves prevented the ship from leaving, and she caught fire in a matter of minutes. When the crew abandoned ship, the wind shifted, and she floated into the harbour.
British fire made little impact on the invaders' position, as the windmill's three-and-a-half-foot-thick walls protected those inside from the worst of the barrage. In addition, the Hunters had mounted their three cannons outside the windmill's door and the volleys from these guns kept naval vessels far enough away to prevent any direct hits from that quarter. On Wednesday a truce was called to enable both sides to dispose of their dead. During this time, a steamer named the Paul Pry crossed to the Point, and those aboard advised the Hunters to leave.
The fire was finally subdued near dawn just before it engulfed the Commercial Bank building. The west side of King Street had been spared by a change in the wind's direction. Houses along the lower reaches of Clarence Street had been saved by quick-thinking souls who pulled down a burning tavern. Along the waterfront, from Johnson Street to Brock, there were only ashes. In the area bounded by Market to Store Street and Front to King, only four buildings survived. In addition to the myriad businesses lost in the fire, some forty houses were razed, leaving forty-five families homeless.
