In 1852, author Harriet Beecher Stowe, a native of Litchfield, gave abolitionism a great boost with her best-selling novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. Set on a Southern plantation, the book converted thousands of Americans to the antislavery cause. In the proslavery South, even possessing the book was considered dangerous. An abolitionist with a more radical approach was Torrington-born John Page 33 First published in installments in the antislavery newspaper National Era, Uncle Tom's Cabin sold 300,000 copies in a few months when it appeared in book form in 1852.

The British surrender at Yorktown in October marked the end of major fighting, and two years later a peace treaty officially recognized the independence of the United States.  For the remainder of the war he served as a brigadier general for the British, conduct- ing raids in Virginia and Connecticut.
