Atta came to the United States in the summer of 2000. He shaved his beard and traveled to Florida, where he got in touch with his friend from Hamburg, Marwan al-Shehhi. In the fall of that year, Atta received a bank transfer of $100,000 from an unknown source, and both Atta and al-Shehhi signed up to take flying lessons at Huffman Aviation in Venice, Florida. They paid $10,000 each by check. After arriving in Portland on the evening of September 10, Atta and Alomari checked in at a Comfort Inn on a stretch of highway known as Maine Mall Road.
It was oddly quiet. Few people talked. But then there was nothing really to say. There were no words to describe what had just happened. The morning began quite differently for Mohamed Atta. M. in a motel in South Portland, Maine. They had driven to Portland just the day before in a car they had rented in Boston, arriving in the late afternoon. They planned to spend the night in Portland, then catch a plane back to Boston early the next morning. Atta, at least, knew that it would be the last morning of his life.
She passed them on the way out. Then they saw two bodies on the floor. Some firefighters from other units were already on the scene, and a makeshift command center had been set up in the lobby to coordinate a plan of action. The chiefs were trying to determine how far down the fire had spread. But communications were broken, and the men were having a difficult time getting exact information. The chiefs figured that the blaze already had reached the 80th floor. Firefighters would have to go up the stairs to put it out because few elevators were working, and there was a danger that burning jet fuel from the plane might cascade down the elevator shafts.
